Firefox 1.0 PR and Thunderbird 0.8

·277 words·2 mins
Mozilla has once again updated its software offerings. The new Firefox Preview Release (PR) gives us a taste of what we can expect in the fourth quarter when the full version is released. New features include: RSS Sensing If the page you are visiting has set the right tags, an RSS button will appear in the status bar, listing available feeds (RSS 0.92, RSS 2.0, Atom 0.3). Live Bookmarks Once an RSS feed is found, it is captured as a Live Bookmark. The bookmark then looks like a folder with the contents being that of the feed. Slick! Improved TypeAhead Find which now shows an unobtrusive search bar at the bottom to help control your searching. Slight UI Improvements Although the changes are slight, overall they much improve the experience of using Firefox. The URL slot turning beige when at a secure site is a nice touch. Thunderbird also sports some great new features. In particular, it adds RSS feed support. You may think: So what? You just told me about Firefox’s Live Bookmarks. Well, hold on a second. While it’s a nice new feature, it still doesn’t address the problem of managing many feeds and keeping track of what you’ve read. Thunderbird lets you treat them like email, with each article being a message. You can make them read, move them, copy them, and even delete them. Sweet.

Contest: How to Improve This Site

·61 words·1 min
I’ll give a Gmail invite to the person with the best idea on how to improve my site here. In the case that there are several really great ideas, I may give out a couple. Valid types of ideas are: Adding a WordPress plugin of some sort to my blog here. Adding a new section of content. Something original. And… Go.

Software Piracy: Fighting Back

·205 words·1 min
The Unsanity blog recently featured an entry on a shareware author that took a slightly more aggressive stance on software piracy. Slightly might be the wrong adverb for this case as the mechanism employed had the ability to wipe out the offending user’s entire home directory. The author reportedly decided this was too harsh and removed the code a few hours later. Why do I bring this up? Well, Unsanity wanted to keep quiet what the product and who the author was, but Slashdot ran a story today revealing the identity. The cat is out of the bag, as they say.

Ask the Libertarian Presidential Candidate a Question

·66 words·1 min
Living in Massachusetts makes my vote largely impotent (thanks to our electoral college system). This year I think I’ll be voting Libertarian because ideally, that’s how I’d want to vote anyway. Slashdot has a story on asking the Libertarian candidate some questions. This should be fairly interesting and anyone that has been entertaining thoughts of voting Libertarian should probably take a swing and ask a question.

12 Beers and Some PHP Later

·191 words·1 min
I visited Amherst to spend some time with Scott and to see bob’s new apartment. Friday night’s plan was to do a little drinking in the dorms and reminisce. Well, one beer begot two, two begot three, and so on until I finally finished all twelve beers I had. I was feeling great at that point, but that didn’t last. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling sick, but I was barely awake and still quite intoxicated. Because of my recent troubles with my blog here and the fact that my host suggested it was the PHP code, I was having a dream about dealing with some troublesome PHP code.

Partriots Win Season Opener

·144 words·1 min
After a nail-biting three hours, the Patriots pulled out a win against the Indianapolis Colts. It was nail-biting, of course, only because of some sloppy play near the end by both teams. A couple fumbles and a botched punt return put Indianopolis in good position to score with a first down. After a couple weak downs, Indianapolis tried once more on their third down to jockey for better position. To Manning’s chagrin, McGinest sacked him for a huge loss.

The Last Broken Site Update

·104 words·1 min
At least, I hope this is. After finding a couple test entries successfully entered in my test installation, I tried it on my own and I confirmed posting works again. Well, that to me said that the problem was fixed. I added my weather plugin back and guess what. That’s right, it worked and it didn’t break the site. Remember this day, because this is normal operation and proof positive that WordPress works and the code isn’t broken.

I just tried posting with the web interface and it looks like things are back to normal.

Experienced PHP Programmer Needed

·91 words·1 min
I’m trying to track down the problem with my weblog that recently cropped up. My host’s support staff have largely pointed the finger back at me. I’d love to isolate the problem myself either to fix it or have a firm place to point my own finger. If you know PHP and how to debug, send me an email or comment (as long as the comments are still working). Update: Now attempts to post result in thirty copies. I can’t win. At least I can still post with my external editor.

The Long Road to Recovery

·80 words·1 min
Last night, I put in a completely isolated new installation of WordPress in. I made a new database, didn’t change anything but the configuration files necessary to point at the database. WordPress still shit the bed when trying to post new entries. All I can say is, at least they still go through. I’m waiting help from my host and hopefully I’ll get things back in working order soon (especially since I’d like to put my weather plug in back).
