A large part of my time is spent reading and responding to posts at Macworld’s Forums. I enjoy learning new things, helping others, and generally raising the level of knowledge. It’s all very fulfilling.
All except a few select kinds of posts. Some of my personal pet peeves are fairly evident, cross-posting, repeatedly posting “It’s not working” and nothing else, calling a (forward) slash a backslash, etc.
Much less evident and I don’t mention because most people would interpret it incorrectly. That is the fabled “Windows does this” line. To give a little perspective, let me give an example:
Backstage: 42% report 4G iPod audio problems: “Exclusively for Backstage readers: This is an advance version of a news story that will appear on the main iPodlounge web site tomorrow morning. Having problems with your fourth-generation (4G) iPod? You’re not alone. Three weeks after the release of Apple’s newest iPods, iPodlounge readers have reported that approximately 42% of their 4G units have manifested an audio defect identified by iPodlounge, while others have complained of receiving soiled or physically damaged hardware….” (Via iPodlounge.)
Apple news lately has been dominated by recent interactions with Real and in particular, concerning their new Harmony technology (note: that link won’t work on a Mac) which threatens to penetrate the “closed” iPod (one can read more at Daring Fireball as to why calling the iPod closed is silly).
Up until this point, Apple and Real have sounded like two playground kids arguing over who is the “doody-head”.
Real: I’m going to play on the iPod. Apple: No, you’re not. Real: Yes, I am. You’re a jerk. Apple: Am not. Real: Are too. Apple: Not. Real: Too. Repeat as necessary. Up until this point, this has just been a lot of posturing done through press releases.
Netscape 7.2 improves pop-up controls, security: “Netscape Communications released on Tuesday Netscape 7.2, an upgrade to the company’s Web browser that improves control over pop-up windows and adds security enhancements. This is a free download for all users; you can also order it on CD, with a guidebook, for US$14.95. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.1.x or higher, a G3 running at 400MHz, 256MB RAM and 60MB free hard drive space.” (Via MacCentral.)
For any of you using an EyeTV, be wary of its automatic recording checking. This feature will check your TitanTV account for any remote scheduling you’ve done. That sounds well and good. It even works as advertised.
The problem is how persistent it is in trying connect to the site. Current EyeTV users are familiar with a feature that allows one to wake or start up the computer to record a show. Unfortunately, the TitanTV account checking function also uses this mechanism. You may wonder why I would warn about such a thing. Well, if you turn it on to do it hourly, it will start up every hour if it is off. My computer has been keeping me up at night, freaking me out for several nights now.
I’ve recently started using Firefox instead of Safari. My two leading problems are spell-checking and the fact that Firefox insists upon opening external links in a new window.
I finally a solution for spell-checking. Although it’s not nearly as nice as OS X’s system spell checker (which checks on the fly), this is an acceptable stop-gap solution. Long term I think I may have to go back to Safari though (if only PithHelmet would accept new rules from me, damnit).
I went to this movie with high hopes of something original, something unexpected.
I was let down. This movie was fairly predictable. Once you watch the first couple minutes, you can guess the rest of what happens. As much as Alien Resurrection was berated for being a weak sequel to the other Aliens movies, I feel it was a piece of art compared to this film.
The only saving grace of the film was Lance Henriksen of original Alien fame. He’s captivating to watch no matter his role (and yes, I still miss Millenium). I’d say more about how I’m disappointed with his use, but that would spoil the (small) plot for any of you wanting to see the film. Let’s just say that they didn’t use him or his character to their fullest.
After continued use of NetNewsWire, one thing has become painfully clear to me. I need a logo for my site. This isn’t just for the front page, but so I have a favicon because until I do, my site is going to look second rate.
I have zero artistic talent, nor do I have any idea what would look good for my site. I need help. I’m begging. Any artists or graphic designers interested? Leave a comment or send me an email at webmaster [at] godlikenerd [dot] com.
After another week of work and 5 hour nights, I got to sleep in this morning. I woke up at the early hour of 11 AM, but went back to sleep another 3 hours.
I can’t articulate how wonderful this is (well, except essentially losing the entire day). I had dreams I could remember for the first time this week.
Maybe it’s because I still have the collegiate habit of staying up too late, but weekends are better than peanut butter and fluff.
