USB Overdrive Update Coming

As Logitech provides rather piss poor drivers for their mice, I’ve been using USB Overdrive. It’s a great product, but it lacks support for the MX1000’s horizontal scrolling features. No one had heard from the author since some time in 2003 (when the last version had been released). I tried writing to him, but like many others, got no response.

Good news for those that have been waiting (for side scrolling and Bluetooth support): he is still very much working on USB Overdrive and it shouldn’t be too long before a new version is released. He wrote the below on Versiontracker:

Many users are wondering if the USB Overdrive is still being developed and improved because one year went by since the last release. I’d like to reassure everyone that I’m still working actively on the Overdrive and that the Bluetooth version that many of you are waiting for is not far away. I had to spend some time with my (new) family during the past year and I had a lot of other work to do, but the USB Overdrive is still my main interest and I’m not about to let it down. I may not be able to reply to all the incoming email but I do read it all, and all the requests are taken into account. The current beta supports more wireless mouse models, can handle more buttons, knows about tilt wheels for horizontal scrolling, and fixes several minor UI bugs. Next on the horizon are Bluetooth support and a real System Preferences user interface, both of which are almost ready. Keep an eye on VersionTracker and thanks for your support!

Changed Anti-spam Packages

I was using Kitten’s Spaminator to supplant WordPress’s built-in spam fighting abilities, but unfortunately, it was being far too aggressive. It said that Katie’s recent comment was spam. It said the referrer was bad (it wasn’t). It also thought that the lack of email or URL was bad. Those three things were enough to label her post as spam. Not good. I had to retire the plugin from this site. If you tried to post and got rejected because of that, my apologies.

I’ve switched to Dr Dave’s Spam Karma which seems to be working. It has a terrific interface giving much better control and insight into how it works. The comment forms now give it credit and also list how many spams killed by it. Neat. As always though, none of these packages are infallible, so let me know if your comments get munged.

Theme Update

I’ve almost got the site’s theme to the point where I’m ready to start distributing it. There are still a few rough spots I’m sure, so please let me know any weird things going on.

Once I’m totally satisfied, I’ll be making the theme available through one of the site’s about pages.

Ordering the Pickaxe II

Programming Ruby
For my first step in learning Ruby, I’m ordering Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmers’ Guide, Second Edition from Amazon.com. With free shipping, that’ll only be $31.40. Not bad for a 862 page book.

<p>If I can find the time to read all those pages, I should do well.</p></div><div class="goalprogresslink">See more progress on: <a href="http://43things.com/people/progress/d00d?on=94649">Learn Ruby</a></div>

Our First Gem

Starting now, I will be adding a new feature to the blog. Tidbits of exceptional brilliance will be posted to all to read (and attempt to decipher). More regular updates to the site will ensue.

With that, our first contribution:
